9ct vs 18ct gold what's the difference?

9ct Yellow Gold vs 18ct Yellow Gold: What's the Difference?

If you love yellow gold as much as I do, you may have noticed that not all gold looks the same. When I first started working with gold, I was surprised to discover just how different 9ct and 18ct yellow gold appear when placed side by side.

The difference is striking – 18ct yellow gold has a much richer, deeper yellow tone, while 9ct appears noticeably paler. So, what causes this difference, and how does it affect your jewellery choices?

Understanding Carats and Gold Content

The key lies in the gold content. The higher the carat, the higher the percentage of pure gold in the metal. Pure gold is classed as 24ct – known for its striking, vibrant hue, often seen in traditional Indian jewellery. However, 24ct gold is incredibly soft, making it unsuitable for everyday wear.

To improve durability, gold is alloyed with other metals.

  • 9ct yellow gold contains just one-third gold (the rest usually silver and copper), giving it that paler appearance.
  • 18ct yellow gold contains 75% gold, making it richer in colour and prized for its luxurious tone.

Durability and Wear

There's a common misconception that because 18ct gold is softer, it's less hard-wearing than 9ct – but this isn’t true. In fact, 18ct is more durable. While 9ct gold is harder, this hardness makes it more brittle, similar to how glass is hard but prone to shattering. In contrast, 18ct gold’s slight softness gives it a cushioning effect, allowing it to resist damage more effectively over time.

Tarnish Resistance

Another advantage of 18ct gold is its superior resistance to tarnishing. Over time, 9ct gold is more prone to dulling and discolouration, while 18ct maintains its rich sheen with minimal upkeep.

Which Should You Choose?

Both 9ct and 18ct yellow gold have their merits. If you're looking for a more affordable option with a paler finish, 9ct could be ideal. However, if you prefer a richer gold tone, greater durability, and less maintenance, 18ct yellow gold is a beautiful investment that will stand the test of time.

As a jeweller, I often favour working with 18ct for its luxurious feel, stunning colour, and lasting durability. Whichever you choose, understanding these differences ensures you can select the perfect gold for your jewellery collection.
